Elevators 3

Dimpled all right elevator stiffeners!

15 minutes

Still thinking of ideas to dimple the last three or four holes in the ribs, which are too narrow to use either the “tight” dimpler (pop rivet) or the squeezer.

I’ve seen some ideas on the web…

Elevators 2

Clecoed together the right elevator top-to-bottom. Match-drilled and dimpled spars and skins, and the counterweight assembly. Used the tight-spots pop-rivet dimpler to dimple the skin for the forward spar. Deburred all bare aluminum, and removed the protective plastic coating on the wing in strips around rivet lines.

Starting elevators

I cut out all 30 left-hand stiffeners and found the right hand one for the elevators. Scotch-brited all stiffeners. Clecoed the left elevator to the workbench and match-drilled all stiffeners for the bottom, then flipped it and did the top.

On the bottom, I also clecoed and match-drilled the plate that holds the trim actuator.

Rudder

Finished complete preliminary assembly of rudder. Match drilled all parts, dimpled skins and spars and ribs. The last three holes or so in each rudder rib were too narroe to dimple, so I countersunk them.

Since I want to acid dip and alodine the rudder, I didn’t final-assemble it yet. I set it aside in its [...]

Vertical stabilizer

Found all the parts to the VS…I had completed all preliminary work last year, so I riveted the stiffeners tio the skins, match-drilled and dimpled skins to skeleton, and final-riveted the entire piece together, up to the rear spar, whichj I left clecoed. I need to decide which wires to run, and until I do [...]

Back to work

Personal events took their toll, but I’m reinvigorated now and ready to get back to it.

It took a couple of days (2 hours in all) to straighten out the shop, de-rust the tools, and figure out exactly where I am in the plans, but it’s all come back to me. Ah, yes. The rudder and [...]
